Gun Control NOW!

Enough Talking! Act!

For this project my plan is to use social media such as Twitter and Instagram to get my message across. Follow my account @enoughtalkinact to be a part of this movement. I would be posting on both accounts about the issues we are facing in today’s society and it would be up to us to do something about it. We’ve been talking for way to long and NOW it is time for us to ACT.

If you guys haven’t been living under a rock, you all should know about the issue of guns in America. The main topic of my project is about Gun control. The importance of gun control couldn’t be any more prevalent today.

According to a gun violence archive there has been a total of 11,688 incidents of gun violence in America this year alone and 48 of those incidents were mass shootings. A total of 3,017 people have died and 5,247 were injured. Last year, the US saw a total 346 mass shooting. That is about one mass shooting per day for an entire year.

The worst mass shooting in US history took place in Las Vegas, Nevada during an outdoor country music festival on October 1, 2017 taking the lives of 58 people and injuring 500.

The second worst mass shooting happened the year before on June 12 at an Orlando night club. The Pulse Nightclub massacre resulted in 49 people losing their life and 53 wounded.

The Stoneman Douglas High School shooting was the ignition in the fight for gun control. On February 14, 2018 17 people have lost their lives, 14 of the fallen were students and 3 were faculty.

After the violence, the survivors became activist demanding action on gun reform while grieving for their fallen friends. This inspired people not only in their community to join the fight but also others within the country and around the world. Their aim is not to take guns away from the American citizens but for stricter gun regulations.

The regulations include increasing the age to purchase a gun. Some states have raised the age to purchase a rifle and shotgun for 18 to 21. The rifle that is a main focus is the AR-15, which is a semi-automatic military rifle. There are more than 5 millions AR-15s in circulation around the country. According to the NRA it is labeled as “America’s most popular rifle.” It has also become the weapon of choice for mass shootings such as the Las Vegas shooting, Sutherland Springs Church shooting, Sandy Hook School shooting and most recent Parkland High School shooting. What makes this gun so popular is that it is accurate and customizable. This leads to the next ban bump stocks. A bump stock is an attachment that can be put on any semi-automatic rifle such as the AR-15 making them automatic. Lastly, a more thorough background search to insure that guns aren’t given to the wrong people.

Obama has tried to introduce stricter gun laws following these massacres but never got these laws pass due to disagreement in congress. While our current president is hesitant to introduce any gun control laws. His solution is to arm teachers who are highly adept with concealed guns and proposing a bonus for those teachers. President Trump is against gun free zones saying that it is an easy target for killers.

My view is that arming these teachers who are highly adept won’t get the result we as a society wants. The death toll may drop slightly cutting the time of a massacre but there will be casualties, that’s inevitable. My comment towards the president saying that the killers would be hesitant to even take action is false. These killers do plan on living another day after creating destruction, they know the outcome. Majority of these shooting is pre meditated and don’t just happen; these killers have a reason to take the lives of the innocence. The most sensible thing to do is stricter gun laws. Take away the rifles such as the AR-15 or any other of its variant, ban bump stocks and a universal background checks. There is no reason a civilian should feel they should need military grade guns in their possession. If that’s the case there is something wrong with Police, who’s job is to make us feel safe. The way things should happen is to first pass stricter gun regulations, then focus on the police force allowing citizens to feel more safe and also improve the safety in schools such as better security systems.

The reason I chose this issue to be my project is because I want to be part of this change. I don’t want any more lives to be lost. I nor my friends and family don’t want to be a victim of one of these mass shootings. We should feel safe everywhere we go and not be afraid of what could come.

As part of my project I will be marching in the March for Our Lives in NYC. The main March will be in Washington DC; other cities has also created a March for Our Lives. These marches will all happen the same time on March 24th. I will be broadcasting the entire March on both twitter and Instagram so if you guys want to be part of this movement but don’t have the opportunity to make it follow @enoughtalkinact. This will not just be for us but also for future generations. IT’S TIME TO TALKING AND START ACTING.

What can you do?
