Black Panther Project
In the entertainment business and every other occupation/career that is known to man, I can bet you $100 that it is more than likely dominated or has been taken over by shall I say it? The well off people in life, our finer skin tone collection of people, or in blunter terms, white people. If you were not gifted with the pigment known as melanin then it is a better chance you will get the roll in a movie over a melanin masterpiece. There has never been a time where a person can just go to the movies and get the chance to see an all black cast two or three times a month. If there has been multiple movies with a large percentage of African descent cast members, then their story line either deals with overcoming struggles, poverty, incarceration, slavery, but nothing has ever been a positive reinforcing message-until now. “The Black Panther” is a Marvel action film that was first screened in theaters on February 16, 2018. This date changed the lives of hundreds maybe even millions forever. Finding out how this particular movie was able to past multiple milestones and how it touch the lives of millions is the main objective of this project.
Having a project that involved a movie was difficult yet fulfilling because I got to visualize and analyze instead of read a novel and imagine my own analysis of what I believed to have happened. To start my project off, I began to go around my college campus to survey different people on whether they liked Black Panther or did not like the movie without going too in depth about the information within the film. I asked twenty different people and these were my results: as a whole about 50% of the people fell in love with the whole concept of the movie, the people involved and the scenery displayed of Africa and all its beautiful people. 30% of people liked the movie and either because it was a good action movie or they simply enjoyed the movie with no sense of motivation as the 50% of people did. The last 20% of the people said they expected more from Marvel the filmmakers of the movie and did not like the movie because it did not have enough action(if you want to know if they were.. Yes one of them was). After asking people around campus, I went and emailed a couple of people who anonymously answered a few more in depth questions about the movie that I will present in class. To amp up my idea I came up with the idea to record 1-2 people in the hopes of getting a live reaction of how they felt about the movie on camera. Two of my fellow colleges let me record their reaction about the movie. After gathering all of this information, I recorded my own reaction over the course of 3-5 videos giving an overall outlook on how I interrupted the movie and also how I interrupted other people’s reactions. My biggest task with this project had to be trying to combine all the different videos that were made and the physical presentation that I have to present in class because the easiest way to present projects to me is through power point.
Black Panther touched the lives of millions around the world so I went online to see the statistics of how much this movie truly accumulated and how many milestones this movie create in the entertainment business. There has been party themed events, hundreds of dance contributions in school events and even more in contribution to the world’s most talked about superhero in 2018. From the box office website themselves, it was declared that the opening week of Black Panther debuted to $202,003,951 with a 200 million movie budget meaning anything after the opening week would be all profit. As of March, the movie has since accumulated an amazing amount of $1,333,668,7773. From the Forbes magazine online, Arthur Scott Mendelson has reassured his viewers that, “Since it opened above the $174 million opening weekend of Iron Man 3, Black Panther has the new milestone for a solo superhero Fri-Sun debut.” he also let us know that, Black Panther easily dethroned Batman v Superman ($166 million) as the biggest pre-summer opener of all time.” and “Black Panther’s boffo opening is the biggest opening ever for any movie not helmed by a white guy, displacing James Wan’s Furious 7 (which earned $1.5 billion worldwide from a $147m domestic debut despite/because of a diverse cast).” These are just some of the few accomplishments that the Black Panther movie and its producers and directors have been able to add under their belt.
This movie touched the lives of so many people, black people in particular because people need representation. Representation is the key to help children grow up to be successful adults in this world. When little boys watch action movies like Marvel they only see either mythical creatures or white people who are the main characters of these well known films. The only well known black superheros I grew up knowing was “Storm” from “X-men” and “Catwoman” played by Halle Berry. In Black Panther there was an all black cast with literally 1 or more white people as a member. Not only was everyone filled with melanin magic but they were also extremely intelligent, powerful, and beautiful. From movies like, “Roots” to “Set It Off” where people are either enslaved or getting killed/incarcerated to having the upper hand on the world. Kings and Queen draped in jewels with knowledge and family bounding was the key to showing black people that we are beautiful and strong and can not be oppressed unless we continue to let it happen. There was an all women army that worked solely for the king and oh my let me tell you how beautiful it was to see women being the protectors instead of the helpless in an action movie. When “Princess and the Frog” came out representation was one of the reason the movie became so widely respected. Barbie dolls were made after her and little African descent or Hispanic girls felt that they finally had a Halloween costume to look like them. Now with the women warriors, girls with darker skin or even a shaved head due to either personal or health reasons can feel beautiful and themselves because they see a role model in a movie who looks like them. The Princess in the movie was my favorite simply because of what she represented in my opinion. Shuri was the smartest person on earth and had single handedly made all the technology on Wakanda that had to deal with “Vibranium” the strongest stone metal known to the world and Wakanda had all of it harvested in there land.
The Black Panther touched the lives of millions including myself with all of the different topics it covered coming from representation, milestones, and opportunities. Trying to make an all black cast was one of the best things that happened in the entertainment business. I am glad that I was able to be apart of living in today’s society so I can later be able to tell my children on how much of an impact this movie had on the Melanin society and around the world.
