Mental Charging Station of Your Surroundings

                                                                      The Issue
One of the most present issues affecting the present American society today is the mixture of modernization with the environment. In more general terms this is touching on the grand scheme of environmental issues. Living in this modern age brings opportunities to right the wrongs of past offenses to the planet but also can take a dark turn in hurting the environment. Humans have gotten to advance technologically wise to now use say electric or solar or wind power to give green power to those machines that once ran off of dirty fossil fuels. Look at the creation of the light rail train that runs through Hudson County. This useful form of transportation is both efficient and environmentally friendly. Only in the modern age with how advanced technology is could people be environmentally friendly. Another reason why this push for environmental change has been made is through the educated populous that is now pushing of these issues. With the creation of the internet which carries a huge chunk of information on anything ever, people can now go and read up on things like the environment. Not only through the internet but also through the modern education system are the upcoming generation of people more environmentally conscious of these problems. This is, of course, the first thoughts when looking at the issue. But there lies a sadder truth about the modern age that makes both the truth of the positives and the negatives. Society now is ever more so complex with the constant access and stream of information that comes from say social media. Is it possible to use social media in a more productive way sure but there is not a class that everyone must take in handling this new world of media. This stream of information fills up your mental interface with topics and subjects that people would otherwise not know or care about. Even those who use social media in the "right way" may lose track of the true fruits of reality. There is the person who says is upon the information of the subject but will not enact on the learned information since the issue is not affecting them personally. This is sometimes true but in the case of problems with the environment is all around us. But since our minds are glued to the online we lose the true realism of the issue. Social media is not the only culprit of taking away the mental interface of a person. A person living in itself can take president overall. When someone wakes up in the morning the first thing that pops into their mind isn't what the answer to the world's biggest problems, if it is then props to them. For most, its how hungry they are, when they need to go to work, how much is rent this month, do they need to call in a babysitter to watch their child, and other first world important stuff. The mindset is no fault of their own for all of that is important. What I will suggest is that there needs to be a set balance between these individual problems and the huge ones that face society especially when these big issues play into the individual ones. It also does not help in shadowing out the environment around you. This vicious process desensitizes the victim into seeing the issue right in front of them.

                                                             The History of the Issue

The history of the issue can be traced back to the American industrial revolution. This is when factories became a prevalent new mechanism for business owners to make a profit and create new jobs for laborers. No longer did people make their own furniture or clothing, they now get them from factories. A with the rise of factors came to the rise in pollution. This was the beginning of advancement in technology so coal, which then was seen as a helpful tool and now seen as a devil in fuel, was used as the main power source. This was all they could use at that time and oh how it started the chain of damage to the environment. Modernization not only leads to factories but also lead to the urbanization of the nation. People far and wide moved out of the country into cities for work. This in the course of history leads to the addition of pollution from the general populous due to many things such as lack of education, a new will to go out and buy whatever as they please, waste as they please without thought of consequences, and so on. As technology advanced and the nation become more and more modernized the problems of the old were no longer an excuse to be used in this new world. But there is a long history and culture that still has their marks in the society of today. Still, in the uber-consumer mindset do people constantly spend money on items which find their ways into polluting the environment. This can happen either by accident or on purpose. Either way, it adds on to the already historic damage done to the environment. Now once the information got out that environmental issues are the most present problems facing humankind, modernization has lead to the creation of green-friendly technology, a band-aid to cover up the gash done to the earth. This is, of course, better than nothing and should be a step forward for the modern countries to aim for an eco-friendly modern society that can sustain itself. One of the biggest challenges blocking the progress besides the money of multinational corporations is the complacency of the populous at large with this issue. Though obviously there is a giant movement to help the environment there are still a waft of the public that either does not know about the issue or does not care about it. Even when information that can easily be googled is jammed into the face of that side of the public, people will not feel the need to change since in the age of me, it has nothing to do with them on a personal basis. My aim with my project is to do that exact thing.

                                                                        The Project

What I made as my project is a mobile joke charging station. The charging station is a wooden box covered in a dark grey rock-like wrapping paper with outlets on the front and side of it. Poking out of the box is a rectangular blue neon light that is used to both bring over the perspective viewer as well as hold up the Polaroid pictures. The Polaroid pictures describe a journey of someones average day changing the perspective of the individual life and problems to the big life and problems of the environment. The poem also follows the same format to describe the narrative. This charging station is not in actuality charge your electronic devices but instead to mentally check out from them and take charge of your mind. When the device is hooked up to the outlet on the box the perspective viewer will take a gander at the Polaroid pictures shown on the charging station. They'll take a look at the picture which has lines of the poem I made on there. Once they looked it all over it is suggested by a sign that is made to sit on any of the pillows and relax. The viewer can meditate or just think about the environment they live in.
